It is not difficult to find numerous app reviews in boating magazines and online blogs, however, we were surprised by the apps we did not see featured.
1. SkyView
Being out on the water brings the sky into view and on many nights, most boaters don't know what the hell they are looking at. SkyView overlays everything you need to know about the sky above (and below) by just pointing your camera. Just try it.
2. BuoyCast: NOAA Marine Forecast
NOAA Zone Forecasts and real-time NOAA Buoy Data are invaluable resources. Unfortunately, the NOAA and NWS provided websites are cumbersome and difficult to use. This app solves that issue.
3. MarineTraffic
Practical app that shows position of AIS vessels. A great add on if you don't have a chartplotter that displays vessels with AIS transponders. On the unpractical side, we love to watch port traffic anywhere in the world. You can use on your computer as well at marinetraffic.com
4. Windy
This one did appear on other lists, but I will shamelessly repeat it hear. If you want to dig into actual readings from a multitude of sources including small airports and make your own predictions, this app is great. You can use on your computer as well at windy.com.
5. ActiveCaptain
If you have a Garmin chartplotter, you are going to use ActiveCaptain. The integration to the chartplotter is an unbeatable feature and other chartplotter manufactures are following along. We recommend using the app that comes with your device to keep your charts and chartplotter software current. The app also serves as a backup should your onboard chartplotter fail.
